The 2016 Apple fest was a great success, and raised over $7000 towards the Brooktondale Community Center general operating fund!
You can’t have an apple pie without the apples. A Huge THANK YOU goes out to Brayton and Jeanette Foster of Kingtown Orchards who were able to supply us and their other customers with Cortland apples even though they lost their crop to the late frost this spring.
And another Huge THANK YOU and special acknowledgement go to Sodexo Ithaca Dining Services at Ithaca College -Scott McWilliams, Brian the Baker and his team – for baking the pies to perfection the day before the festival, delivering them to us, then coming back to collect the racks. We could not have done this without you!
The community was very enthusiastic about making pies! Thank you all! Nine pie bees attended by 151 people yielded 351 pies to sell at the Apple Festival. We actually cancelled the last two pie bees because we reached our goal!
These are the groups who helped out: Ithaca College Student volunteers (3 pie bees!), exercise class attendees, 2016 AppleFest quilters, ROUSE, Boy Scout Troop 55, Friends of Diana’s, the Caroline PTA, Bunco Babes, and community members at large. Special thanks go to Lucy Gagliardo, and Nancy and Mark Hall for attending all the pie bees and finding space to freeze the pies, and Dawn Smith (the Dough Whisperer) and her granddaughter LuLu who were a great team teaching us how to mix the pie crust and helping troubleshoot when the crust was uncooperative!
NOTE: We have frozen pies still available, both baked and not-yet-baked. Please contact Nancy Hall (firstname.lastname@example.org or 539-7515) if you would like one (or two!) for upcoming holiday celebrations!
New this year! These indoor activities were very popular, so we will continue to include these at future Fests. The Applefest quilters, led by Betsy McKean, helped children sew their own small quilt for a beanie baby they chose from a collection generously donated by a community member. Other activities included pumpkin painting assisted by Annie Loucks, face painting by Mycena Phillips and friends, a table of quilt designs to color and a “guess the # of candies” jar!
This year’s quilt generated a lot of interest! The quilter’s included Betsy McKean, Jean Snow, Beth Hollier, Deb Casey, Diane Bradac, Nancy Hall, Joanne Hindman, Peggy Dunlop, Lucy Gagliardo, Kathy Cornelius, Karen Hansen, and Abby Simonin. We sold almost 2900 tickets, and the lucky winner was Ann Cedarholm of Ithaca, who was absolutely thrilled to win!

EASY AS PIE 5K RUN!
This year administration for the 5K run was taken over by the Caroline Elementary PTA and had 71 runners! Proceeds from the race went to the Caroline PTA Programming and Healthy Food Initiative and the Brooktondale Community Center. Caroline wanted to thank all their sponsors for supporting them for their first ever 5K. It was quite a success! We hope to double the registration for next year. The BCC was very pleased with the outcome and is looking forward to a continued relationship with the Caroline Elementary PTA and school community.
